How to become a beauty writer

Are you interested in becoming a beauty writer? Whether that’s as a journalist, copywriter or content writer, here’s how I ended up working as a beauty writer.

How I became a beauty writer

Here’s how I ended up being a freelance beauty writer who works with brands, publications and industry professionals to create marketing content and editorial:

  • When I was in my early 20s I started a beauty blog as a way to combine something I was interested in with a creative outlet. I was working in a project mangement role, which taught me a ton of skills but ultimately I knew it wasn’t for me.
  • I also did a Beauty Therapy course at night school while I did my degree in Business Studies and worked full time, which gave me a great background into anatomy, science and the skills needed for the industry.
  • My blog led to me moving into a marketing role (not in beauty). I kept it going alongside my role and made a ton of contacts, worked with loads of different brands and gained experience in writing about beauty products.
  • I moved around various marketing jobs and agencies in health, education and beauty, while doing some freelance work on the side.
  • Eventually, I decided to go freelance – after thinking about doing it full-time for a long while – and started to build up my client base.

I’m 99% sure the career path is wildly different now, but that’s how I did it and the journey I took to being freelance.
